Arugam Bay is also ideal for snorkelling. The Basses Reefs is a ‘must-see’ dive site in Sri Lanka.
Home to over 200 species of birds, including rare and migratory birds, the Kumana National Park is just over 10 km away from the Arugam Bay Surf Resort. It can be reached via the Panama – Kudumbigala Sanctuary.
Kumana is best visited during May, June and July. The mangroves of the Kumana Villu, a 200-hectare natural swamp lake, which is fed by the Kumbukkan Oya, is filled with birds at this time. Popular birds spotted in the park includes pelicans, painter’s stork, spoonbills, white ibis and herons. Hoards of wildlife also inhabit the park, among them, leopards, elephants, deer, fox, wild boar and sloth bear.
Catch a glimpse of the elephants as they freely stroll through the Lahugala elephant corridor. They are best seen before day breaks or at sunset, during the dry season in July and August.
